I got a lot of response yesterday in private messages from the post on Addictions so maybe we struck a chord with people. One of the real negative aspects of addiction is the loss of self-esteem and self-respect. People who are experiencing addiction often beat themselves up and store up a lot of anger and self-loathing.
One of the secrets of overcoming addiction is to learn to love yourself in your situation. Love your addiction because your addiction is you at that moment, acting out due to some other issues, usually something in the past that you are having trouble resolving or dealing with.
Having compassion on yourself releases you from self-condemnation and helps to give you time and space to recover. Recovery is not overnight. The descent into full-blown addiction is generally slow and so is the ascent back to health and recovery. Sick people need time to heal.
None of us are perfect. Making mistakes is the human condition and those who like to pretend they are perfect are really denying their humanity. Pride is a terrible obstacle to growth and healing. Allowing ourselves to be imperfect and human is a step forward to becoming a better, more whole person.
Happy are those who really want to be better human beings. Realizing you are a faulty human is the only way to get your broken parts fixed. A car can't get fixed unless its owner realizes the car has a problem and takes it to a mechanic. The best soul-mechanic that I know is the inner spirit that counsels and comforts the broken human beings. Make an appointment with the soul-mechanic. His shop is always open free of charge. 🚗🔧🙂
