My Zen Oasis

Writer: Richard RevelstokeRichard Revelstoke

Nature is beautiful and often in the morning when the birds are singing and the sun is shining so warmly it feels we are living in paradise. Then we head off to work to join the fray of daily life and this illusion is quickly shattered — the briefest view of the news is certain proof that paradise is a long way off.

Man’s world and our modern technological society seems to divorce us from the spiritual world. We’re children of nature and the ceaseless and perhapssenseless noise and aggression we witness on the city streets often makes us feel the divine is far away or not even there.

Joshua ben Joseph often used examples from nature to reveal spiritual truth because we intuitively understand nature and connection to creation gives us a sense of security and well-being. Joshua spent an enormous amount of time alone in the hills in communion with both creator and creation.

The need for inner peace is very real especially when we are confronted by the outer war of daily life. Some say that nature is cruel but it pales in comparison to the cruelty of human beings. Nature never seems intentionally mean.

Many find their zen oasis in music and art. The act of creating beautiful sounds and sculptures is therapeutic and soul refreshing. Painting, singing and dance gives a sense of joy and renewal. And we need renewal. We need restoration and a space to recharge our depleted batteries.

Even a cell phone needs to be recharged every day. We need to remember to plug in to our personal charging station whether it is through prayer or art or exercise or meditation. At the end of the day if you are down to one or two bars it’s time to plug in. 🏖 Find your zen oasis, drink from the waters and bask in the sunshine 🌞 Have a happy productive day!
