According to modern science we are an evolving race of super-animals descended from a lower species. There are some newer findings that suggest we as well as primates are descended from lemurs. This probably does nothing to soothe the theological wounds or offer consolation to creationists who are no doubt unwilling to accept we are evolved from bug-eyed rodents instead of chimpanzees 🙈🙉🙊
Nearly all (around 97%) of the scientific community accepts evolution as the dominant scientific theory of biological diversity. Buddhists, Hindus, Baha’i, Catholics, Sikhs and a high percentage of Muslims and Protestants support evolutionary theory. The only real denial of evolution comes from a small percentage of evangelicals, primarily American fundamentalists, Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses.
Does this mean that Christian doctrines of original sin, the fall of mankind, atonement and redemption are flawed? Well, the sad truth is yes it does. Christianity says we were created in perfection and are slowly descending into depravity without the intervening death of a sacrificial son to keep us out of Hell.
Evolution says we are actually progressing forward from a lower animal nature. All of nature reveals that growth and variation is the norm. Everything healthy grows. The overwhelmingly implication (not proof) of DNA is that there is a designer. Things cannot spontaneously self-create themselves without intelligence whether artificial or super-natural.
If we left all the parts for a car lying around or floating in the ocean for millions of years there is zero probability that they will spontaneously form themselves into a functioning car (with a tank of gas.) The problem with rejecting God for the scientist is equal to the problem of rejecting science for the believer.
What evolution can teach the believer about God is remarkable: God is extravagant with time. He is willing to spend billions of years patiently tending the garden of life until a free will being who can know him arrives on the scene. This should tell us that we are valuable to him and his plans for eternity.
God has everything except mortality and it is through us that he can experience mortal life that has a beginning and an end. He became like us to understand us. And he also looks out through our eyes as he indwells our souls and walks through all of life with us.
Evolution is all about progress and progress is the watchword of the universe. Onward and upward is the call of the spirit deposited in all mortal will creature’s hearts. We are innately driven to seek perfection in all aspects of life whether material or spiritual. Even the Carpenter’s Son taught “be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
