The Boredom of Hell

Writer: Richard RevelstokeRichard Revelstoke

We get the word "boredom" from the root "bore" meaning a dull or annoying person. The ending of "dom" means it is the "state of" or "ruled by" similar to the word "kingdom." Therefore it's a realm ruled by a bore. (that would be you if you're in that state lol.)

If there is a kingdom of heaven, then for sure there's a boredom of hell, a place of tedium and mental inactivity where nothing happens and apathy reigns. Human beings are designed to do and to be, inactivity is biological death for all living things. We must move forward or perish.

In the USA, there are some specially designed torture chambers of perpetual boredom and isolation called ADX (U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum.) A former warden once described ADX as “a clean version of hell.” Inside the ADX is H Unit which is reserved for terrorists such as the Underwear bomber, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Prisoners in H Unit have little or no access to the outside world. They are not permitted books or media. Letters they send to family and friends are often not sent. They are in solitary confinement in a 75 foot square cell 22 hours a day.

We are taught that isolation is the worst possible state for personal spiritual growth: "The religion of Jesus is salvation from self, deliverance from the evils of creature isolation in time and in eternity." (5:4.5)

Isolation and boredom go hand in hand. Boredom occurs when we withdraw from life, when we find no interest and everything seems tedious and banal. Life is meant to be creative and full and rewarding. Joshua ben Joseph came to give us a more abundant life.

The life of service to our brothers and sisters is rewarding, both here on Earth and beyond to eternity. The cure for boredom and isolation is a life of service to others, forgetting about your self in exchange for doing what is best for the family. Peace.
